It was a very beautiful morning in Tokashiki Island. Well, it’s always beautiful here no it’s morning, afternoon or night.

The wakeup call is like usual, 6.30. Today is pretty much the day I’ve been waiting for. Because today we’re going to snorkel! It’s my first time snorkeling. As excited as I am, I’m also afraid that I’m going to get tanned, so I put layers and layers of sunscreen. Haha.

At 8.30 we went to our minibus to go to the Marine activities campsite for snorkeling. The weather was very hot, so I put on some more sunscreen just in case.xD Haha, I am so scared to get tanned! After 30 mins of driving to the place and looking at the beautiful scenery of Tokashiki Island, we finally arrived. At first I was very confused why we’re going snorkeling in a place surrounded by mountains. But when I went pass the gate, there was a very beautiful beach with clear blue water. This beach suddenly became one of my favorite beach!

First of all, all of us gathered in a room for the introductions and instructions on how to snorkel and use all the equipments that’s needed. After that, my group (group A) went snorkeling first. I saw many corals and fishes, it was very interesting. Time passed, and our time is up. 30 minutes feels really fast when we’re having so much fun.

All the participants were very tired, and we just realized that we still have a lecture. I personally don’t like lectures, but today’s lecture was so much fun! We got to act like we’re 10 years old and we played the Shopping Game. The game wasn’t just a game, I learned that from buying things, we have to pay attention not only about the price but also to the disposable cost.

To end today’s tiring day, I went star gazing with Kaori. While we’re stargazing we shared a lot of stories. And I also saw 3 or 5 shooting stars; at first it was very shocking because it’s my first time seeing a shooting star. Apparently, we have to be in our rooms by 10 o’clock, so we went back to our rooms and say good-bye to the beautiful night sky at Tokashiki Island for today.

Okay, tootles guys!

Today is a day that would forever be engraved in our hears. One that fills of feelings indescribable to the soul. Even till now, a little of me still tingles as the feelings of emptiness run through my heart. Reminiscing the great times that we had with our beloved youth leaders hailing from last years edition of AYDPO, embracing their energetic charisma and cherishing the valuable insightsthat they offered makes tonight ever more lonely.

Today also marks the day where we begin our journey on the serene, pristine and virgin island of Tokoshiki. The eventful morning began with our assigned cleaning duties- the shower, corridor, room and taking out the garbage. This followed with a hearty breakfast and a tearful farewell for the youth leaders. We were then scheduled to travel to Tomari Port where a ferry would move us to Tokashiki Island.

Memories of the journey on the ferry would be one that would be remembered forever. Laughter was exchanged, closer bonds were fostered and smiles were evident on everyone’s face. The wind unfailing combed our hair and the view never failed to astound as we stood on the deck exchanging conversations.

Upon arrival, we were ferried by bus to the Okinawa Youth Friendship Center where we were welcomed by the vice deputy director of the youth center. An informative lecture was then held at the Auditorium by Professor JM Purves from the University of the Ryukyu presenting a very enlightening and eyeopening topic of Okinawa from ancient to modern times. He briefed us about how civilisation in Okinawa started out from the very beginnings of migration of people from South-East Asia to Ryukyu (at that time modern day Okinawa excluding the Amami Islands) to the formation of Utakis around Okinawa which gradually developed into Gusukus (“sacred places/ castles”) and later to the establishment of ties with the Yuan Dynasty of China which saw it gain in prosperity and power. A question and answer session promptly followed after dinner where many doubts and misconceptions were clarified.

Signing off,

This is the last day which the youth leaders will spend with us. I feel extremely bad and I was not really in the mood when visiting the TRIM cooperation. But it was cool, though.

In the afternoon, the youth leaders presented the presentation last year for us. I was deeply inspired and surprised by their energetic plays and passionate speeches. The atmosphere was great and all of us were watching carefully.

At night we had a farewell party for all the youth leaders. Tae had a creative idea that we helped youth leaders dress up. They looked so fun and really made us happy before they left us. After that we took photos with the youth leaders and expressed our thanks to them. I am so grateful because they have helped me learn a lot. They helped me to be a kinder and more helpful person. I also have learnt to be more outgoing and join our activities. And finally I figure out the meaning of them existing in our life. At least they teach something on the way, no matter whether they will accompany us to the end or not. What we learnt is going to be with us through all the hard and happy times.

I love them, and also all the participants and staff that I will say goodbye to after weeks. lol

Today was the 5th day of our program. We arrived in japan, The weather was sunny. It was the first day We wore a pink shirt. We ate breakfast and then got on the bus. The bus headed to the center of JICA

When we arrived at JICA, we played a game that I had never heard of. The game was to hold each other’s hands r

oughly, while prople tried to escape that tight holding. It was the first time, I played that game. It was really fun.

After the game was finished, we listened to a lecture. Then we had a group discussion about the cause and effect

relationship between various energy related issues. The group atmosphere was really serious. I felt disappointed, I

kept hoping everyone smile. As the conversation got deeper, many interesting and good ideas were shared.

After the group discussion, we had a delicious lunch. Then we got on the bus again. We went to a unique universi

ty in Katsuren Uruma city. It was really fun. I learned some amazing things there. My favorite part was learning

Okinawa’s traditional dance and music. All the participants seemed to enjoy it. The “Kimutaka No Amawari Musical”

was also really good. I was surprised the age of the participants was similar to mine. It was a great and passionate

musical. I also learned about the history of Okinawa through Mari’s translation. lol Honestly, I didn’t want to leave.

After seeing the musical we moved to Itoman Youth Center. We were divided into four groups. I was in a group with

Dee and Karen, two friends I had made during the trip. We played games and we talked about the days we had

spent on the trip. We talked about the youth leaders. Many people were crying. I held back from crying because

I don’t like to cry in front of others. I wanted to show them a happy, smiling face. I really wished I would have said

“Thank You” It was an amazing day. <3

Today is a big day for the opening ceremony. In the morning, all of us spent much time choosing our formal clothes. We looked really different and smart in suits or traditional costumes. We started off to Bankoku Shinryokan after breakfast. Happy time on the bus again~ Maybe someone was a bit nervous about the serious moment, because it was said that we were going to be on TV! But the songs on the bus took away all our nervousness. It was only confidence that we had.

We found ourselves in a dream when we got off the bus. The sea was beautiful around us, and the fluffy clouds just floated over the roof. We did rehearsals of the opening ceremony twice. We went onto the stage group by group and everyone made a pose 🙂 Everything went pretty well. Then came a short break. During the break, we took many photos of the sea, and of course, ourselves. This was really a fantastic place of attractive scenery.

Then the opening ceremony began. Everything went well as we expected. Everyone showed his best pose. Later we had a really mouthwatering lunch. For me, I think two full plates of food is not enough! There were also Okinawan traditional dance during the lunch. Everyone went forward to enjoy it.

In the afternoon we had a lecture. The professor was nice, he tried to speak slowly and explained everything in detail. Although the points were sort of abstract, I think we would get them and apply them to our life in the program, and in our future life.

Today was an awesome day. We learned a lot, and enjoyed a lot as well.

Today was really amazing! It was the Opening Ceremony at the Bankoku Shinryokan hall, where the G-8 summit took place, I was so excited to be there. Walking into the beautiful grounds, the azure blue sky and the stunning sapphire coloured sea was breathtaking. The flags that lined the opening ceremony hall and on the sidewalk gave a very official and prestigious feel to the ceremony. Everyone was dressed in their national costumes or formally dressed and we all were delighted at each other’s clothes. I remember Jude from the Philippines from my group  6ies Marshmallows (TADAAA!) wearing a shirt made entirely from pineapple fibre, this also inspired our group to think of our winning mid term presentation idea- solar fiber clothing! YAYY! 😀

I was feeling so happy and proud to represent my country Brunei with my friend Kai (other Bruneian participant) for most people it was the first time they saw our national dress: Baju Fashion(Kurung) for me and Cara Melayu for Kai. I was so pleased when a lot of people complimented my dress saying ‘kawaii!’ to it XD It made me really happy. The food was delicious! I am especially appreciative of the Halal food they offered so I got to enjoy a lot of yummy dishes as well as the dessert table that I loved. One of the dessert creams had gold leaf on top which was really fancy to try 😛 Afterwards we had a lecture by a famous professor from Tokyo university, I was really impressed with the work he did, does and is going to do. All in all, an extremely enjoyable and memorable day! To future participants, don’t forget to take photos! It’s a very enjoyable experience and welcome to the AYDPO family ^.^ 😀 Also, while I’m here I’d like to say thank you, thank you, thank you to 6IES MARSHMALLOWS (Tada!) forever and our Sugoi jejeje tutors Thu and Kodai 😀 I love you all.

Today was a very exciting and eventful day.  After having breakfast it was time for a lecture. The title for today’s lecture was “Our Planet Earth and Energy” which was taken by Mr. Hajime Kiyuna. I found the lecture very informative and innovative. Firstly Mr. Hajime took a weather balloon and made a roughly scaled model of the earth with it with was scaled down to 10,000,000 times having a diameter of about 130cm. After the model was ready sir asked us various questions like how big would be the Mount Everest if it was scaled down for that model we made, everybody started a discussion on it among their groups and came up with various answers. At last the answer came out to be 1mm!!! Everyone was amused. Sir told that this was why the surface of the earth looked flat from outer space as and even the highest peak on earth was a miniature thing when compared to the whole earth. Sir then repeated this scaling down for the oceans and atmosphere and then told us that even though we think that the water in the oceans and the air in the atmosphere is nearly infinite, but in reality it is very less. Then after a little break the lecture resumed, now sir told us about energy using various experiments showing the pressure exerted by gasses. These experiments though being simple in performing turned out to be very informative and interesting. Overall the lecture was very virtuous.

After the lecture it was the time for Haari. All of us with great excitement started out from our accommodation in the busses to Nanjo city. Even while the trip we were mesmerized by the magnificent beauty of Okinawa. On reaching when the briefing was done we all were ready to row. As most of us were doing this for the first time some teams lost balance some even fell but in the end everyone was able to have a lot of fun. Along with being fun this activity also helped increase the co-ordination between the groups. After all the races were done it was the time for results and the tutors took away the prize. After the amazing experience we said goodbye to Nanjo city and headed back to Itoman.

Back after the fun but tiring activity all the people had a lovely dinner and after that the participants and youth leaders headed to the lecture room for the Katayabira talk. This talk was conducted specially by the youth leaders for helping the participants solve any problems they had. The youth leaders divided themselves into four groups namely – Friendship, Homesickness, Communication and cultural differences. The participants could go to the specific groups according to their problems and the youth leaders tried to help them in any way as possible. Youth leaders told the participants about similar problems they faced during their time as a participant and told about the ways how they were able to cope up with them. These views helped the participants a lot and all their sad faces during the talk turned into smiling ones till the end of the talk. In my opinion this interaction would surely lead to better program for all of us.

This day has raised my expectations of AYDPO 2013 and I am sure the rest of the program would be as good as this day too or even better !!!! .

Sayonara !!

Hi! Daniela here 🙂
I`ve been late for two days because of my government papers. I miss some of the exciting moments with my AYDPO 2013 family. I arrived at the Okinawa Naha airport at 5:30 pm and arrived at the accommodation at 6 pm and they are having their dinner. I was nervous that time because I don`t know what to do, I don`t know how to use chop sticks, I didn`t know that we should change our slippers when entering the cafeteria and also I don`t know what going on because they say something before and after eating that I don`t know the meaning. When I saw my group mates I was afraid to talk to them because they talk with each other using different language and I`m shy that time because I don`t know what they will think if I show my crazy side ;(.  All of the Lemahahanago-oh family welcome me with open arms like Aydpo 2013 welcome me. I don`t know what to say. Hmmm…. By The Way I`m Daniela the craziest in the group though I`m crazy they still love me 😉 😛 AYDPO is GREAT AMAZING! One word is not enough to describe AYDPO :))

Aug. 24 – Day 20

Today marked the last full day of our program and also the moment where days and days of preparation were finally going to pay off. The closing ceremony started off with speeches made by various speakers, most congratulating us on completing this program and emphasizing the strength of the connection we now have. A surprise was in store for us as a slideshow of our photos throughout the days played with songs that we had enjoyed during the program. The final presentation went smoothly with things running as we had planned initially, and perhaps even better than expected. As many of us frantically clambered to spend the last few moments with each other taking photos, it started to dawn on many of us that all good things must come to an end. Saying goodbye to people who had to leave today wasn’t easy for many, and it made many of us realize how important all the friendships we’ve made during this program were to each and every one of us. The program may have ended, but the friendships never will.

As I write this diary, I already got back to my home country. By this time, I already experienced the sad realization that all of us needed to go part ways. But as we say it, this is not a goodbye, but rather “see you soon”.

With our 3 weeks of learning experience and cultural exchange with our fellow youths, we were able to compose our Vision 2032 for sustainable water supply; awareness, quality and equality that all of us will strive for the future generation. We also had the reception wherein we enjoyed Okinawan delicacies and dances. Then, we had the opportunity to go at Kokusai Street to shop for souvenirs. And lastly, we started to send our regards not just to our co-participants but also to the facilitators and coordinators since we have different schedule of departure.

In the deepest of my heart, I want to say thank you so much to the AYDPO family (participants, facilitators, coordinators, and youth leaders) in making my 3 weeks of stay in Okinawa one of my most memorable experience in my whole life. To Papa Latino, Miri, Yori, Nori,  Sayuri, Asa, Sho, Tom, Makoto, Mido, Mariko, Shina, Mina,Tora and other facilitators and coordinators, thank you very much! Your support and kindness to us helped a lot in our stay in this program. And also to the tutors and my co-participants, I won’t forget you~ <3

Again, this is not a goodbye… but rather SEE YOU SOON! ^_^v

Aug. 23 – Day 19

Today is 23rd of August, i got up at 5:00am. Took a deep breath of fresh air in the morning before beginning the preparation of “FINAL PRESENTATION”. I’m in charge of the Art and Visual – Props team. I finished my job as soon as possible because it was the second last day before the final presentation. We were really slow but we made such a cool vision board and tomorrow we are going to have the “FINAL PRESENTATION” of AYDPO 2012 yeah!! Awesome, right?

Then, around 9:00am we have a lecture by MR. ODA KANETOSHI , he showed us how to dirty water can be changed into clean, drinking water with the addition of Polyglutamic Acid. At first, in the beaker, there was nothing but contaminated lake water. After the addition of Polyglutamic Acid and 1 minute of rapid stirring, then it changed to pure water with just colloid particles on the bottom which can be easily filtered. Also, he has travel to many countries around the world to provide education and water treatment technology utilizing Polyglutamic Acid to help people who live in rural areas so that they can get access to clean water. After the lecture, it was lunch time and i really love Japanese’s food. i like everything except Nato. If you’ve tried eating it for the first time, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Furthermore, we went back to preparing for the “FINAL PRESENTATION”. While working, we sang a song called “THE FUTURE WHERE WE BELONG”. It is an original AYDPO 2012 song that was composed by the participants. I’m very happy that i joined this program. This program helped me gain a lot of skills and I totally had a lot of fun.

Finally, I would like to thank my tutors, facilitators and all the other participants. I’ll remember all the times that we shared and enjoyed. All the tears, joys, disappointments, achievements, encouragements and helpful advice forever and ever.
